West Wales cardiac report prompts calls for ‘urgent action’

Commenting on the publication of a critical review into cardiac services at Bronglais, Withybush, Glangwili, and Prince Philip – which issues a number of recommendations for improvement and also raises concerns over mortality data in the Hywel Dda health board area - Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Health, Darren Millar AM, said:

"This is another highly critical report into a Welsh NHS already creaking under pressure and reeling from Labour's record-breaking budget cuts.

"Cardiac services in Wales remain under intense scrutiny and Labour's Carwyn Jones should apologise for clear failings taking place under his watch.

"Further expert concern over death rates data should ring alarm bells in the ears of Welsh Labour ministers – who consistently refuse a Keogh-style Wales-wide NHS inquiry.

"It's not about name-and-shaming. It's not about point-scoring. It's about identifying problems and putting them right. This report is further proof that a review is desperately needed."

Assembly Member for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, Angela Burns, said:

"This report will further worry communities already struggling with the enormity of problems facing our Labour-run Welsh NHS.

"There are clear concerns over the collection of mortality data at Withybush. This requires a statement from the Labour minister and a guarantee of urgent action."

Preseli Pembrokeshire Assembly Member Paul Davies said:

"This is another expert report which criticises our Labour-run NHS and calls for urgent improvement. It's about time Carwyn Jones and Welsh Labour listened.

"My constituents will be understandably worried by these findings and it's absolutely crucial that improvements are made and mortality data investigated.

"Report after report, criticism after criticism; this is further evidence of the need for a Wales-wide public inquiry into standards of care."
