The organisation of the 2012 Olympic Games in London and their impact on Wales has been outlined to Preseli Pembrokeshire's AM by Lord Coe.

Welsh shadow sports minister Paul Davies AM and Nick Bourne, Mid and West Wales AM, met Lord Coe and other Olympic officials during the Conservative Party conference in Blackpool.

Speaking after the meeting Paul Davies said: "This was an extremely constructive and informative meeting. "The 2012 London Olympics are clearly going to bring benefits to Wales and it is vital that we engage with the games' co-ordinators at the earliest possible stage.

"Winning the bid to host the games was a magnificent achievement and sport in Wales can only benefit from both the Olympics and Paralympics being staged in London in five years' time.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which we must ensure leaves a lasting legacy throughout Wales and the rest of the United Kingdom." Assembly leader and Mid and West Wales AM Nick Bourne said: "I am delighted that Lord Coe and his team were able to meet us in Blackpool to discuss how preparations for the London Olympics are progressing.

"Welsh venues such as the Millennium Stadium will play a major role in their plans and we want to maximise the benefits for the whole of Wales in terms of sport, the economy and tourism. "We are also anxious to ensure that while we make the most of the 2012 Olympics, grassroots sport in Wales does not lose out on funding.

"The Labour-Plaid Assembly Government should be working with Olympics organisers to ensure Wales does not miss out on any of the benefits which will come from hosting the games in Britain.

"Welsh Conservatives would be happy to talk to ministers to ensure they are fully up to speed on current developments."
