Welsh Conservatives lead agenda to ease lockdown

Friday, 10 July, 2020

Following the announcement today (July 10) ending the latest three-week period of lockdown caused by the Covid pandemic, Paul Davies MS – Leader of the Opposition in the Welsh Parliament – said:

“Yesterday we published a list of 10 things we wanted the Welsh Government to deliver as part of its coronavirus restrictions review; today we have seen Ministers adopt six out of 10 of our proposals so we are pleased to see the Welsh Government following our lead.”

Welsh Conservative calls comprised (tick denotes announced today):

  1. Relaxing the two-metre social distancing rule (with mitigating measures) ✘
  2. Requiring face coverings on public transport and in shops ✘
  3. Re-opening indoor dining (pubs, bars, cafes, and restaurants) ✓
  4. Re-opening campsites ✓
  5. Re-starting services in places of worship (socially distanced) ✓
  6. Re-opening playgrounds and outdoor gyms ✓
  7. Re-opening beauty salons and wellness clinics ✓
  8. Re-starting driving lessons and tests ✘
  9. Re-opening toilets in pubs, bars, cafes, and restaurants ✘
  10. Re-starting house viewings ✓

Mr Davies added:

“We are disappointed at the unnecessary delay in implementing some of these changes so we see no reason why re-opening campsites and beauty salons, and re-starting house viewings can’t be brought forward.

“And we are disappointed that there’s still no clarity on face coverings, relaxing social distancing, or driving tests and lessons in Wales.

“It is essential that we get Wales moving to kickstart our economic recovery from the pandemic and take advantage of the UK wide schemes announced by the Chancellor this week. If we keep lagging behind then livelihoods will be lost needlessly.”
