Welsh Assembly Government Must Do More to Attract Top Sporting Events

Welsh shadow sports minister Paul Davies is pressing for more to be done to attract top sporting events to Wales.

The Preseli Pembrokeshire AM says that after the Ryder Cup in Gwent in 2010 there is a dearth of top events coming to the country.

"We have some of the best facilities in the UK with the Olympic pool in Swansea and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and we must make sure we are promoting them properly as venues for prestigious international events," said Mr Davies.

He has now pressed First Minister Rhodri Morgan to lobby for more top flight events and for central Government help in paying for them.

"I strongly believe that Wales should get back a little of what it deserves," added Mr Davies.

"The Welsh Heritage Minister has told us that Wales could lose some £70 million as a result of the London Olympic Games.

"We need to make sure that the flow of sporting event traffic and funding is not all one way."
