“At critical moments in our country's history, including just a month ago when Her Majesty The Queen addressed the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, the Royal Family has always been able to mark these occasions with the right words.

“We have just heard The Queen – who herself is a WWII veteran – deliver an address to the nation to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day at the exact same time that her father, His Majesty King George VI, delivered his address to mark the end of the war in Europe.

“War is not to be celebrated, but commemorated. Today we commemorate the men and women of Wales, the rest of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and many other countries who helped defeat the evil Nazi regime.

“We remember all those who took part – some no doubt from our own families – especially those who died for the freedoms that we hold so dear.

“Today we are engaged in a struggle of a different nature, one that has cost so far many lives, here and abroad. Life, for the most part, has changed radically, and it is especially hard for people to be separated from family and friends.

"Life, with all its routine struggles and problems, and happiness and fun, will return to normal and so we must look to that time when, be it a sunny day or not, we'll meet again.”
