Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies has called for urgent investment in improving green spaces.
He told the Senedd that Welsh towns and cities needed better open spaces in order to promote healthier lifestyles and encourage wildlife.
"Improving our urban community environments must be a matter of urgency," he said.
"Such improvements will make our communities greener and improvements to sustainable transport networks, such as footpaths and cycle tracks, will not only benefit the environment, but public health as well."
He was speaking during a Conservative debate that expressed concern at the lack of green urban spaces and called for more green corridors to be created.
He added: "At a time when we are searching for environmentally sustainable modes of transport, such as walking and cycling, greater investment in the creation and promotion of green corridors is vital.
"High quality urban areas and green spaces will have community-wide benefits, not only as a tool for greater social inclusion, but for improving health, wellbeing and people's general quality of life."
