Top Green Community Projects Receive Award From AM

Paul Davies AM for Preseli Pembrokeshire has presented Friends of Mynachlog Ddu Playingfields with a prestigious 'Green Pennant' Award for an unprecedented third year running.

Only 77 community green spaces have been rewarded with a Green Pennant in the UK, an award exclusively for those sites managed by voluntary and community groups. 17 Green Pennant Awards have been given to sites in Wales, which is an increase of 42% on last year.

The Green Flag Award scheme, which has been running since 1997, is the national standard for parks and green spaces managed by the Civic Trust, and the Green Pennant Award is an additional scheme under this umbrella. All sites must be judged to be welcoming, safe and well maintained with substantial involvement from the local community.

The Green Pennant recognises the achievement and hard work of voluntary groups who manage their green spaces for the benefit of their local community.

Paul Davies AM said: "I was delighted to present the Green Pennant Award to the community of Mynachlogddu and I would like to congratulate them on their hard work and efforts. They have demonstrated the importance of green spaces in our communities. It is essential that individuals, families and groups are able to enjoy the environment in which they live."

He continued "The people of Mynachlogddu have shown true community spirit by pulling together to improve and protect their surroundings. They have ensured that the whole village and indeed visitors will have an attractive green space to enjoy. This community is an example to us all."

Mel ab Owain, the Green Pennant Award scheme's programme manager, said: "We are once again delighted with the huge growth in winners, highlighting the importance quality green spaces play in our communities. Well done to the many passionate individuals who have worked hard to provide these vital green spaces which help improve the quality of life for everyone. I am sure that there are many fine examples of community green spaces elsewhere in Pembrokeshire and I would urge them to apply."
