First Great Western is to help a group of youngsters realise their dreams of getting to Abu Dhabi, to compete in the World Finals of the F1 in Schools challenge in October.

The three 15 to 16 year olds from Ysgol Dewi Sant in St Davids and Monmouth Comprehensive had the 2nd fastest car at the F1 in Schools National Final and won the Chairman's Award for Best Team Identity, securing them a place in the World Finals to be held in Abu Dhabi.

Welsh Assembly Member Paul Davies approached First Great Western seeking help in getting the winning team to and from the airport.

He said:

"I'm pleased to be supporting the Motion Racing team from Ysgol Dewi Sant on their journey to the World Final in Abu Dhabi next month. I am also very grateful to First Great Western for their generosity in providing travel tickets for the team on their way to Abu Dhabi.

"The team have already done fantastically well by coming second in the UK National Final and I wish them every success at the World Final. I'm sure that they will make Pembrokeshire, and indeed Wales very proud."

FGWs Manager for the Central Region Steve Tyler said:

"These kids have done amazingly well in reaching this final. Not only did they win the South Wales Regional Final, a phenomenal achievement in itself, but they have also been recognised at a national level.

"First Great Western is committed to supporting the communities we serve and I am delighted to be able to help these young stars on their way to the World Finals.

The Chairman's Award for Best Team Identity recognises a team's professionalism, not just in appearance of the team but in their conduct, helpfulness and camaraderie.

Dave Haynes, Deputy Head Teacher at Ysgol Dewi Sant said:

"I am immensely proud of what the team has achieved. They have worked very hard to reach the World Finals."

F1 in Schools is a global multi-disciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature compressed air powered balsa wood F1 cars.

The Welsh team, Motion Racing, is to travel to Abu Dhabi for the World Finals on 26 October 2012.
