Rivers Trust calls for ‘better regulation’ of Anaerobic Digesters

Friday, 16 June, 2017

There are calls for better regulation of the use of anaerobic digesters in Wales following a series of incidents leading to pollution.

In some cases, the machines – used to break down animal and food waste into gas for energy – have failed, causing a “slurry-like” substance to leak into water courses.

The Rivers Trust of Wales is calling for stiffer penalties.

Commenting for the Welsh Conservatives, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs – Paul Davies – said:

“The Cabinet Secretary should bring forward a statement in response to these calls by the Rivers Trust.

“Natural Resources Wales must be able to provide the public with confidence that the use of anaerobic digesters is being properly regulated and monitored.

“Of course the responsibility for properly managing these units falls with the farmers who set them up, but NRW has a vital role to play and the public looks to them for reassurance – particularly if the worst does happen.”
