COMMENTING on today's claims that 30 teaching posts could be lost in Powys due to growing pressures on school budgets, Shadow Education Minister Paul Davies AM said:
"This could well be the tip of a much larger iceberg. Schools and local authorities have to make some very difficult decisions in order to balance the books over the next 12 months.
"It is becoming clear that schools are facing growing budget pressures due to the Assembly Government's failure to properly fund councils across Wales. With the Labour-Plaid government likely to cut up to £500mn from public services next year this crisis could get even worse.
"Ministers need to stop blaming councils and get their own act together. Proper investment in education is not only vital for our children's futures, it will help provide the skills and knowledge required to give the Welsh economy a competitive edge."
