Pembrokeshire Sixth Formers Being Let Down By Lack Of Funding

Welsh Shadow Education Minister Paul Davies says Pembrokeshire's sixth formers are being let down by a lack of funding.

Welsh Shadow Education Minister Paul Davies says Pembrokeshire's sixth formers are being let down by a lack of funding.

The Preseli Pembrokeshire AM is concerned by Welsh Assembly Government plans to reorganise post 16 education in Wales.

The Labour- Plaid coalition has reduced 6th form funding in Wales by 7.43 per cent.

"We cannot hope to encourage 16 year olds to stay in education or gain good quality employment if our Further Education sector is not adequately funded and supported," Mr Davies told the Senedd during a debate on the subject.

"Further education needs to be fully funded in order to develop a skilled workforce that will lead us out of the recession and assist us with future growth and economic development."

Mr Davies has already had discussions with Pembrokeshire College about funding problems and possible reorganistion.

"It simply does not make sense for the Assembly Government to even consider cutting funding to such a fundamentally important sector," Mr Davies added.

"On the one hand, the Assembly Government is asking Further Education providers to do more, but on the other hand, it is not offering the funding required."
