Pembrokeshire could miss out on high‐tech services such as "on‐demand TV" because super‐fast broadband internet access is too expensive to install in rural areas.
Every home in Britain is supposed to be able to get broadband by 2012, however the Government has now admitted that many rural communities may only be able to get slow broadband by that date.
Communication minister Lord Carter revealed last week (22 April) that it won't be economically viable to build a next generation fixed network in up to a third of the country.
It is feared that rural west Wales may fall into this category.
Preseli Pembrokeshire Assembly Member Paul Davies is disappointed by the news: "Once again it seems we are to be punished for living and working in a less populated area," he said.
"Broadband is now a necessity in daily life, not a luxury and everyone should enjoy the same levels of access. Problems with broadband are one of the most common complaints I hear from constituents.
"I will be lobbying the Welsh Assembly Government to ensure that Pembrokeshire is not left behind once again."
