Local Assembly Member Paul Davies has welcomed the decision of some Pembrokeshire County Councillors who voted against plans to reorganise education provision in Haverfordwest. The proposals included the closure of both Sir Thomas Picton and Tasker Milward Schools and the creation of a new 11-16 school, with post 16 provision to be largely delivered in a new sixth form centre at Pembrokeshire College.

Mr Davies said, “I’m delighted that some Pembrokeshire Councillors have listened to local people and voted against the Council’s proposals for education in Haverfordwest. These plans have not been proved to show an improvement in education standards for children and young people in Pembrokeshire; and I’m pleased that most councillors have recognised that. Our school sixth forms offer a great deal to their local communities and any changes to education provision in Pembrokeshire must ensure that they are protected. I sincerely hope that we can now move forward to support education provision in Haverfordwest and deliver a first-class education service for our children and young people.”
