Paul Davies Warns of Keeping Your Electric Blankets Safe

Electric Blankets

Local Assembly Member Paul Davies has visited a local Age Cymru branch to hear more about electric blankets and to raise awareness of the importance of them in homes across Pembrokeshire. Sadly, damaged electric blankets cause more than 5,000 house fires a year in the United Kingdom, and by taking some small safety steps, people across Pembrokeshire can ensure their blankets are as safe as possible.

Mr Davies said, "Electric blankets can be dangerous when not properly looked after and checked and so I'd like to urge the people of Pembrokeshire to take the necessary safety steps to protect themselves. The staff at Age Cymru have done a wonderful job in raising awareness of this important issue amongst local people and I am pleased to add my support to their campaign. They have been working with Fire Support Officers from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service who were there to carry out the electric blanket safety checks."

He added, "It was great to see Age Cymru and the Fire Service working in partnership to help prevent the deaths and injuries that are caused by accidental fires. Simple steps like having your blanket checked by an expert at least every three years, storing your electric blanket safely by rolling it out and not folding it; and just regularly checking for signs of wear and tear such as fraying fabric and scorch marks can prevent a dangerous situation. If you or your loved ones own an electric blanket make sure to take these steps and ensure your home is as safe as possible."
