Milford Haven's new library has proved a hit and attracted 160 new members in its first month. The Haven's Head facility is four times the size of the old library in the town centre.
The County Council was congratulated on its investment by shadow Welsh Local Government Minister, Darren Millar, when he visited the new library.
"I am very impressed with this new facility, it is great for local residents," said Mr Millar.
Pembrokeshire has one of Wales' highest spends per head on libraries and Milford Haven is the sixth library to be revamped in he county in the past three years. However it is feared that many local authorities may soon have to cut library hours and even close libraries as funding from the Welsh Assembly Government is reduced.
"I am very concerned about the future of libraries in Wales," added Mr Millar. "Given the pressures that they are facing, I think Pembrokeshire is one of the lucky ones to have already invested."
Paul Davies AM said that relocating the library had been worth the upheaval.
"Looking at the superb new facilities they have got here – 17 computer terminals compared to five in the old library – then you can see that it was worth moving for the extra space and facilities." Joan Cole, senior library assistant, said:
"We have been very busy since we opened and have made 160 new members. The boat in the children's section is very popular and we have had a lot of positive comments from people."
