Preseli Pembrokeshire's new Assembly Member has gained an admission from the Welsh Rural Affairs Minister that more needs to be done to get Welsh produce on to supermarket shelves.
Paul Davies asked Minister Jane Davidson whether she wanted to see a statutory code of conduct between farmers and supermarkets to ensure fairer prices.
"We have seen a 30 per cent reduction in the number of dairy farmers in Wales in the last decade, and the number of people employed in agricultural holdings has fallen by 13 per cent since 1996," Mr Davies told the Senedd.
"Agriculture is the lifeblood of rural Pembrokeshire—it is central to the wellbeing, not only of farmers, but of the many small towns and villages that depend on it. When agriculture prospers, the whole community benefits—it has a knock-on effect on all our rural businesses."
Mrs Davidson agreed with him that farming was vital to Wales and said that she would shortly be meeting farming leaders to discuss the issues.
"There have been some local agreements on milk and Welsh lamb," she added, "but we need to do more to ensure that our fantastic produce is available in supermarkets across Wales."
