THE majority of weekend arrests in Pembrokeshire are alcohol related, says Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies. He is now calling for greater funding for detoxification centres to help solve the problem.
"My local police have informed me that the majority of arrests during the weekend are alcohol-related," he told Social Justice Minister Brian Gibbons in the Senedd.
Mr Davies was pressing the Minister to find out what plans the Labour-Plaid coalition had to reduce anti-social behaviour in Wales.
"It causes huge concern in our communities across Wales," said Mr Davies.
"Some anti-social behaviour and petty crimes are due to alcohol abuse.
"While not all of the people who are arrested have a drink addiction, some are hardened drinkers who, unfortunately, will become addicted. It is not the Government's responsibility to tackle this abuse on its own; it is also the responsibility of individuals, families and parents to try to change the culture that exists in this country.
"We need to increase the number of alcohol detoxification and rehabilitation centres throughout Wales in order to support people."
