Preseli Pembrokeshire Assembly Member Paul Davies is urging the people of Pembrokeshire to support a Welsh Conservative petition calling for easier access to life-prolonging cancer treatments in Wales. Recent independent research by the Rarer Cancers Foundation found 24 cancer medicines routinely available to patients in England, which are not as easily –or routinely – available in Wales. The Foundation estimated it could cost as little as £3.3 Million to rectify the problem and create a Cancer Drugs Fund in Wales, similar to a fund already operating in England.
Mr Davies said, "I would like to take this opportunity to encourage the people of Pembrokeshire to support this important petition, which seeks to increase access to cancer drugs and other treatments in Wales, such as recent innovations in radiosurgery. It's deeply regrettable that it is currently more difficult to access modern cancer treatments in Wales than in other parts of the UK. Sadly, as a result, Welsh patients are five times less likely to access some cancer treatments than patients elsewhere."
"Members of the public can sign the petition online at: http://yourvoiceintheassembly.co.uk/cancertreatmentfundpetition/where you can also read more about the Welsh Conservative Cancer Treatments Fund policy. I hope that the people of Pembrokeshire will support this important petition to help us encourage the Welsh Government to improve Cancer drugs provision across Wales."
