Local AM Paul Davies is supporting County Councillor Myles Pepper's calls to consider alternative solutions to remedy the traffic problems recently seen at Lower Town Hill, Fishguard. Due to a landslip, one lane of the hill has been closed with traffic lights in operation. This is causing delay and inconvenience to road users, and although remedial work is taking place, it is uncertain how long the traffic lights may be at this location.
The South Wales Trunk Road Agency who manages the road on behalf of the Welsh Government has been asked by Cllr Pepper to give consideration to temporarily realigning the road so it will allow two lanes of traffic to flow without the need for traffic lights. Other suggestions include temporarily closing the footpath and encouraging pedestrians to use the path below, which will also allow two way traffic to flow.
Commenting on his suggestions, Cllr Pepper said "It is vital to businesses and every day living that the restrictions be removed as soon as possible and particularly so as we begin the tourism season at a time when the economy has never been more uncertain. The beautiful hamlet of Lower Town suffers enough from traffic related problems and to face even more congestion is clearly unacceptable. I would urge the Minister, who has now taken responsibility for the works required to make the highway safe, to bring the works required to a safe conclusion as a matter of the greatest urgency."
Paul Davies AM commented "When Myles contacted me to let me know of the suggestions he had made to the South Wales Trunk Road Agency, I was pleased to offer my assistance. Whilst safety must be of paramount importance, it would be beneficial if steps could be taken to return to a two way traffic flow whilst the work is on-going. I have, therefore, contacted Edwina Hart AM, Minister for Economy, Science and Transport to support calls for these proposals to be given full consideration."
