An admission that Pembrokeshire was left without GP cover overnight once last month is of great concern to local AM Paul Davies
The GP who was due to look after the county at the end of September was sick so cover was provided instead by a GP in Ceredigion.
Until last October there were three GPs based in Pembroke, Tenby and Haverfordwest who provided cover for the county through the night and at weekends.
But the reorganisation of the local health service saw the Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire out‐of‐hours services merged.
Now there is one GP based at Withybush Hospital, another at Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth and another in Llandysul.
"We were already in a situation where we have just one out‐of‐hours GP based in Pembrokeshire, a county that's home to 115,000 people," said Mr Davies.
"So when that GP called in sick we were left without a county‐based GP.
"The health board says that cover was provided by Withybush A & E and the GP in Ceredigion but that wouldn't have been much good if someone had needed a home visit in the south of the county.
"The new Local Health Board must review this essential service to ensure that this situation does not happen again and that Pembrokeshire gets the full GP cover it deserves."
