The importance of the Welsh language is being outlined to the National Assembly today (Weds 27th).

Paul Davies, AM for Preseli Pembrokeshire, is leading a debate at The Senedd which will reaffirm the Conservative's support of the language. "In Preseli Pembrokeshire 26.7 per cent of the population speak Welsh compared to 20.5 per cent nationally so this is an important issue for me," said Paul.

"It may surprise some people to know that it was the Conservatives in the 80s and 90s who established S4C, set up the Welsh Language Board and introduced the Welsh Language Act."

Mr Davies will be leading a debate calling for the appointment of a Language Commissioner, giving both Welsh and English official language status and making Wales more bi-lingual.

His motion will be voted upon by all the Assembly Members and if passed, should be acted upon by the government. A fluent Welsh speaker himself Mr Davies added: "Welsh speaking is on the increase thanks to the Conservative policies of the 80s and 90s and this debate should help in our aim of creating a totally bilingual Wales."
