Service models were confirmed by Hywel Dda health board following the establishment of the Maternity, Neonates, Paediatrics and Gynaecology Programme Board. The service models will be implemented from August 2014, where Withybush Hospital will lose three obstetric training doctors, whilst also being unable to safely staff paediatrics and neonatal services.
Mr Davies said, "I'm appalled that the Health Minister and the local health board have decided to steamroll ahead with these controversial plans. The Health Minister has made it clear that there would be safety nets in place for midwifery units, and yet this latest announcement confirms that more obstetric doctors will be lost from Withybush hospital. Given that midwives do not perform Caesarean sections, what will happen if there's an emergency during labour, and a caesarean is urgently required?"
"These changes are dangerous and will have a severe impact on the people of Pembrokeshire. I will continue to raise this issue with the Minister and I urge him now to intervene and put a stop to this before it's too late."
