Preseli Pembrokeshire Assembly Member Paul Davies has been selected for an Assembly short debate on the 11th July and has decided to use the opportunity to discuss the protection of war memorials in Wales. The debate will look at how the Welsh Government, local authorities, War Memorials Trust and other charities and organisations can work together to ensure that these memorials are safeguarded.
Paul Davies said, "We have a great opportunity ahead of the World War 1 centenary, to discuss the issue of protecting war memorials in Wales. Across the border, there are a number of campaigns that are raising awareness of war memorials and it is only right that we in Wales do the same. It's absolutely crucial that we remember the sacrifices that the armed forces and their families made, and continue to make, every day for the safety of our country. We must all ensure that future generations are fully aware of how their ancestors fought bravely for our country."
"Sadly, the rising cost of metals has meant war memorials have become a target for theft due to their scrap value. It is essential that the authorities does all that they can to reduce, and indeed, eliminate metal theft."
War Memorials Trust director, Frances Moreton said, "War Memorials Trust welcomes Paul Davies' efforts to raise awareness of the threats to our war memorial heritage. As we approach the centenary of World War I, during which war memorials will be a focal point for remembrance, it is vital we encourage communities to look after their memorials. The Trust hopes it can work with others and build upon its links in Wales to help ensure war memorials are not just ready for the forthcoming centenary but are preserved for future generations marking anniversaries in the years ahead."
