Commenting on the news that universities in Wales will receive a £30 million cut in funding for 2010/11, Shadow Minister for Education Paul Davies AM said:

"These cuts will undoubtedly put even more pressure on universities in Wales at a time when they are already stretched to the limit.

"Wales already has a shortfall of almost £100 million compared to institutions in England and this is affecting our ability to compete in an increasingly global marketplace.

"A thriving university sector is vital for the Welsh economy, particularly during difficult economic times.

"By failing to invest in higher education the Assembly Government risks long-term damage to the Welsh economy, skills base, and the promotion of life-long learning."
