Fishguard Roads "Not Busy Enough" To Solve Lorry Problem

Wales' First Minister Rhodri Morgan has described driving through Fishguard as "extremely difficult" for lorries, but says there are no plans to build a by-pass to solve the problem.

The issue was raised in the Welsh Assembly by Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul

Davies.

He asked Mr Morgan whether the Government would consider building a by-pass north of Fishguard to prevent lorries getting stuck in the Lower Town.

Mr Morgan replied: "I am familiar with Fishguard. Driving through the town is extremely difficult due to the winding road through Lower Fishguard to the top of the hill, down the other side, to the top of the next hill, and so forth."

However he said that the A40 was not considered busy enough to dual and added that the planned bypasses for Robeston Wathen and Llanddewi Velfrey are the current priority.

Mr Davies said he was disappointed by his response.

"I have argued for years that the A40 needs to be dualled for economic and safety reasons. I have seen Government statistics that prove it is busy enough to be improved, however the Welsh Assembly Government is determined to bury its head in the sand on this one.

"Mr Morgan has at least admitted there is a problem in Fishguard but he seems to be turning a blind eye to it."
