Pembrokeshire could be getting its own renal dialysis unit in less than two years, says local AM Paul Davies.
At the moment about 40 people in the county have to travel up to three times a week to Carmarthen to receive the life-saving treatment.
A two-year £39 million revamp of Withybush will see the hospital get its own unit, but the county needs one sooner says Mr Davies.
"Two years is too long," he said. "I have heard from a number of patients about how long they have to spend travelling every week for treatment. If they live in Fishguard or on the coast then it's a huge distance to go."
He's been lobbying for a quicker solution to the problem and raised the matter at a meeting held with health minister Edwina Hart.
"I've also been writing to Health Commission Wales and they've told me that a focus group is being set up to "drive forward" the setting up of a satellite unit at the hospital as a matter of urgency.
"They've also told me that they have provided the group with examples of other units that have been set up successfully and that they are supporting such a scheme at Withybush.
"I am greatly encouraged by this news as it really looks like we could be getting a unit in the not too distant future."
