Paul Davies MS – the Leader of the Opposition in the Welsh Parliament – has outlined the Welsh Conservative roadmap to recovery and to exiting the lockdown caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

He made his announcement ahead of that of the Welsh Labour Government’s. 

Mr Davies said that a Welsh Roadmap to Recovery must include:

Timelines

• A timetable for, and then phased, re-opening up of Welsh society. The United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland have published theirs; so must Wales.

Milestones

• Milestones to be established and in order to track the progress of and meet the timetable. These should include testing capacity and, crucially, the virus transmission rate.

Taskforces

• Set up along key ministerial and departmental lines to have responsibility for implementing and monitoring the progress of the roadmap.

Finances

• To support delivery of the roadmap and help businesses and individuals to get through the pandemic and back into a more normal life.

Mr Davies added: “Being realistic, we know we’re in for the long haul on the road to recovery. The effects of this pandemic have been like nothing in peacetime, and we do not expect any government to have achieved its country’s full return to normality in the short term.

“However, it is essential that over the next few months we get the economy moving, schools up and running and crucially families back together. What Wales needs is hope, ambition and a clear vision for the future – something the people of Wales are crying out for.

“That’s why we are outlining our plans, our vision of a roadmap to get Wales working again, because we as individuals, and as a nation, and as part of the United Kingdom will benefit from the decisions made now in the days, and weeks, and months ahead.”
