County councils should reveal the end destination of our recyclable waste, says Preseli Pembrokeshire AM Paul Davies.
Many items that are collected for recycling such as plastic bottles are shipped abroad for final processing.
Assembly Members are now pressing to make the business more transparent by placing a duty on councils to report
"In sending this waste abroad, none of us can know what effect this has on our environment," Mr Davies told the Senedd.
"Nor do we know what effect this has socially. We do not know what type of conditions people who deal with waste at the other side of the world have to suffer.
"Are those conditions acceptable? We simply do not know. I believe that we have a moral responsibility to know what effect this has on the people who have to deal with our waste on the other side of the world."
He was speaking in support of a measure proposed by Plaid Cymru AM Nerys Evans.
"What is the point of us in Wales believing that we are being responsible when, in reality, we are being completely irresponsible in letting our waste to go abroad without knowing the implications?" he added.
