Concerns Again Raised Regarding Public Funding of Ffynone & Cilgwyn Woodlands

Woodlands

Local Assembly Member Paul Davies has again raised concerns regarding the granting of public funding to Calon yn Tyfu Cyf (Calon) for the purchase of Ffynone and Cilgwyn Woodland. In September 2006 £502,000 was awarded to Calon by Forestry Commission Wales (FCW) from their Cydcoed II Programme. Subsequently the Wales Audit Office and the National Assembly for Wales' Public Accounts Committee issued critical reports on the grant funding.

Mr Davies commented "One of the many recommendations in the Public Accounts Committee report of February 2011 was "that FCW work with Calon to secure designation of the greatest possible portion of Ffynone and Cilgwyn Woodland under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 at the earliest possible opportunity." Three years later this has still not happened, and very understandably members of the local community and I are questioning why recommendations in the reports have not been implemented."

Mr Davies added "Another recommendation in the Public Accounts Committee report was that FCW should encourage community involvement in the decision making surrounding the woodland by all means possible. However, it seems that Calon have made inadequate efforts to engage positively with the local community. Given these on-going concerns regarding the spending of over £500,000 of public money I have again written to the First Minister urging him and his Government to take appropriate action. I have also written to the four Welsh Members of the European Parliament to highlight these concerns given that this money originated from the European Union."
