Following Moylegrove's 82% vote in BT's Broadband "Race to Infinity", campaigners invited BT Director for Wales, Ann Beynon, to speak at an open meeting last Monday in Moylegrove about how the village can benefit from their result.
David Burns, who chaired the meeting, said: "We had a first-rate turnout; the hall was packed with folk from Moylegrove who wanted to find out from Ann Beynon when we are going to see this superfast broadband."
At the meeting Ms Beynon explained that large areas of rural Wales were uneconomic for BT alone to upgrade to "Next Generation Broadband" and that extra cash would be needed before work could commence. She told the audience that The Welsh Assembly Government are seeking funds from Europe and BT will be tendering for this money within the next few weeks. If they are successful then all of Wales could be upgraded by 2015.
Local Assembly Member, Paul Davies, who came to the meeting to support the village, said: "It's fantastic that 82% of Moylegrove residents have registered with BT to improve their broadband service. This is a wonderful achievement, which demonstrates the community's determination to improve this vital service." He went on to say: "Given the dedication and commitment of the community; and the importance of broadband to educational and economic development, I would urge BT to take action by looking to improve the broadband service in the area. I will do what I can to support the community in its endeavours to improve broadband services."
Ms Beynon was asked when Moylegrove could expect to see their exchange upgraded. She pointed out that the roll-out was subject to a standard BT formula, but with Moylegrove doing so well in their "Race to Infinity", this increased their chance of being one of the first uneconomic exchanges in Wales to be upgraded.
Local businesswoman, Rachel Thomas from Coast & Country Holidays, said: "Our business, like many others in the area, depends on a reliable and fast broadband service. This upgrade will give us the chance to develop our business and further improve the service we offer."
"Moylegrove did really well in the "Race to Infinity" and BT has acknowledged this," said local campaigner Julia Guest. "There is now an opportunity for other communities in the area to make it known to BT that they too have a good case. Collectively we can be the trailblazers in the roll-out of Superfast Broadband across rural Wales."
