Local Assembly Member Paul Davies has recently visited Ysgol Dewi Sant to see the school's entry to the F1 in Schools Challenge. Pupils from the team "Motion Racing" will head to Abu Dhabi to compete against teams from 40 countries at the World Final, this October. They are collaborating with a Malaysian team – Aeromach – which means overcoming time differences, cultural and language barriers.
The F1 in Schools Challenge is an international competition which aims to simulate the real world of F1 racing. Teams of up to six students, aged between nine and nineteen, have to design, manufacture and race small balsa wood cars powered by compressed gas, down a 20m track. They are then judged on their race times, pit displays, portfolios, marketing, sponsorship, verbal and technical presentations.
Mr Davies said, "I am delighted that the team has qualified for the World Final in Abu Dhabi this October. They had the second fastest car in the UK National Final for the F1 in Schools Challenge and won the prize for 'Best Team Identity' which is a fantastic achievement. I wish them all every success throughout the remainder of the competition."
Ahead of the World Final, teams must raise sponsorship and manage budgets to fund research, travel and accommodation.
Mr Davies added "I would also like to take this opportunity to appeal to businesses in the area, to help assist with funding for the trip. Sponsor's logos will be displayed on the stand, team shirts, the car and portfolio. If you are interested in being part of this winning team, please contact Kelly Dixon, Motion Racing's Sponsorship and Marketing Manager at info@motionracing.co.uk"
