A shocking £176,000 bill to kennel stray dogs in Pembrokeshire over the past five years has been uncovered by local AM Paul Davies.

A shocking £176,000 bill to kennel stray dogs in Pembrokeshire over the past five years has been uncovered by local AM Paul Davies.

Mr Davies is now urging dog owners to get their pets microchipped to help cut the bill and be reunited with their dogs more quickly.

"I was amazed to hear that the council estimates it will spend £3,700 a month on this problem this year," said Mr Davies.

"It can cost as little as £15 to have your dog microchipped and it is well worth it for the peace of mind it gives the owner, not to mention the money it could save the taxpayer."

Mr Davies praised the county council for its previous good practice on animal welfare issues.

"I know that the council has held joint roadshows with the PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) and the Dogs Trust in the past aimed at promoting microchipping and responsible pet ownership and they should be commended for their work.

"What I would like to see now is more support for local authorities coming from the Welsh Assembly Government.

"It must look at working in greater conjunction with councils and animal charities to promote and subsidise microchipping.

"It would be a short term cost that could save a lot of money in the long term."
